Does the right size cause difficulties?

Measuring ring size easily and accurately

Measuring at home is best done with either a caliper from an old ring or a ring sizer.

This way, you ensure the correct size at once. Although a ring can be exchanged, it incurs extra work and costs. In addition, the exchange process takes at least several days.

Other home methods, such as measuring the circumference of your finger with a strip of paper or a measuring tape, almost always lead to a size that is too large.

Note! A narrow ring should be one size smaller than a wide ring.

Measuring at home can be done accurately in the following ways:

1) Caliper

Measure the inner diameter of an old, but fitting ring with a caliper as shown in the image below.

Note! Check that the old ring is round. A bent ring gives an incorrect result.

Calipers can be purchased cheaply at hardware stores.

2) Ring size

  • Insert the rounded end of the measuring tool through the hole under the magnifying glass and pull it through
  • Place the gauge on the desired finger and tighten it so that the measurement is snug but still comfortable
  • Pull the ring gauge back to the joint area. The gauge must also fit through the joint (sometimes the joint is the widest part of the finger)

Interpretation of measurement results

In Finland, the commonly used measurement standard indicates sizes such as 17 mm or 17.5 mm. This indicates the inner diameter of the ring in millimeters. An even more commonly used unit of measurement in Europe indicates sizes such as 54 or 56. This indicates the length of the inner circumference of the ring, or the thickness of the finger, in millimeters.

In the table below, you can see the equivalence of these measurement units. In the Taika Helsinki online store, both of these ring measurement units are provided for each ring. The smaller value is the inner diameter (mm), and the larger value is the inner circumference (mm), which is the finger's circumference.

Inner diameter / Inner circumference

  • 16.0 mm = 50 mm
  • 16.5 mm = 52 mm
  • 17.1 mm = 54 mm
  • 17.7 mm = 56 mm
  • 18.3 mm = 58 mm
  • 19.0 mm = 60 mm
  • 19.7 mm = 62 mm
  • 20.4 mm = 64 mm

Note! finger size varies constantly:

  • In the morning and again in the evening, fingers are usually swollen, as well as in hot weather or after eating salty food.
  • In the middle of the day and in cold weather, fingers are at their smallest.
  • The best time to try on a ring is in the middle of the day, in room temperature.
